The Return

I'm moving back here after too much time spent washing around the murky waters of tumblr. It's taken me a long time to realise that Livejournal was always a safer, more welcoming place for its users. I'm not sure if that's because most of us grew up in the infancy of the internet or that we've all been here for far too long. Whatever the reason, I'm leaving tumblr alone for a few months. It was a shallow medium anyway and I'm sure I've wasted too much of my life there already. Livejournal facilitated creativity. For some reason Tumblr sucked it away. That's not why I left but it's a point worth taking away.

Anyway, I know there's not very many people here at the moment but it feels like home.

Also, I forgot how much I love icons. And mood themes. And journal layouts.

So... I read this a little while ago when it first came out and I have to say I was quite excited, not least of all because it was delivered in script format. Having spent some time working in this format I'm always looking for things to read that aren't Shakespeare or A Streetcar Named Desire... Don't get me wrong - they're great but the script format is a woefully under-loved text.

At the outset I did not have any expectations of recognisable characters (yes, I was wholly unspoiled - somehow) so I was quite thrilled when the gang rocked up.

...I was less thrilled to discover their characterisations were startlingly off kilter. Honestly, most fanfic authors manage a better job of Hermione, Ron and Harry. Their interactions were as forced as their dialogue to the point I'd rather they be left out of it entirely. The original characters were more than capable of carrying the story and were, for the most part, well thought out and enjoyable.

The highlight was of course Snape's re-emergence. The writer is without a doubt a fan of the character. It showed in all-too brief scenes they manage to nail. Also - am I the only one or did they really bait the Hermione/Snape shippers for a moment there???

Anyway, I read it as I read all Harry Potter - at breakneck pace. It was all over in a few hours and I'm glad I bought it.

Overall rating was: disappointing.
I'm not sure I'm happy to consider it canon either.

Safest outcome is if it didn't come from J.K.'s pen, I'm going to file it under published fanfic.
